Fill in the Plants

Burcu Perçin

20 April - 20 May 2017

Burcu Perçin’s new exhibition, which will meet the audience at x-ist, focuses with a distinctive irony on artificial nature landscapes built by humankind. Questioning the artificial images in landscape constructions in different areas of the city, the artist produces landscapes shaped under the dominance of green. In her new series, Burcu Perçin sheds light on landscape images manifested in green areas by the modern human, while centering her work on its troubled relation with nature.

In her compositions, the artist reinterprets man-made nature arrangements that she came across in Istanbul as well as in different countries that she has visited. The exhibition also includes some works featuring marble images which might be familiar to the audience from the artist’s previous series.

The artist makes the following assessment concerning her new series: “Together with the heavy destruction that we cause in nature, our need for it increases day by day. So we try to satisfy this need by building artificial natures. This new understanding of nature which is different from the past landscape tradition becomes the focus of the exhibition. In this way, we try to create our own safe areas in artificial natures produced by us. These landscapes turn into a nature formation which some of us look at shudderingly and some of us embrace without noticing. But can we really get in touch with this artificial nature that we have created? To what extent do we internalize it? To what extent does it make us feel safe? What kind of a link can we establish between wild nature and the current landscapes that we have built on it? How do we fill in the plant?”

You can visit Burcu Perçin’s new exhibition entitled “Yeşili Doldurmak / Fill in the Plant” between April 20 – May 20 at x-ist.
