Burak Dak’s second solo exhibition at x-ist “Men Strolling With Hands in Pockets” invites viewers to reflect on masculinity and toxic masculinity. According to the artist, masculinity has historically been constructed as an identity defined by rigid norms and power dynamics. Toxic masculinity, on the other hand, emerges as a harmful and destructive manifestation of these pressures.
The phrase that gives the exhibition its name, “Men Strolling With Hands in Pockets”, critically examines the societal perception of masculinity as a symbol of power, associating it with ease and indifference. Burak Dak’s works expose the destructive consequences of the masks of masculinity legitimized by society. These masks conceal the oppression, manipulation, and abusive attitudes hidden behind them. The male figures in the exhibition feed on the damage they inflict upon their targets, sustaining their own existence through the harm they cause.
The artist highlights the necessity for men to embrace emotional freedom and vulnerability in order to break the cycle of destruction they perpetuate. Arguing that emotional expression and empathy are essential for inner balance, Burak Dak explores how the shadow aspects of masculinity are justified and perpetuated through societal disregard in Men Strolling With Hands in Pockets. The artist invites the viewer to uncover the unseen darkness beneath these masks.
The exhibition will be on view at x-ist’s Gümüşsuyu venue from March 6 to April 5, 2025.
