NOCTURNAL

November 19-December 19, 2009

Banu Birecikligil's past shows have been a reflection of combined elements from her childhood, family pictures, images from newspapers, trying to come to grips with the real world. In her new show “Nocturnal”, the artist journeys to her deep interior, removing herself from the rules and influences of the external world, a surreal night journey taking us between heaven and earth.

This journey is not just a journey into the subconscious dream scape but a journey of maturation where the artist confronts or has chance to encounter with archaic creatures/symbols which are vital to her maturation allowing her to reach her potential as an artist. While cautiously collaborating with some of them, and she tames others, revealing her powers. During her contact with these creatures, she questions the unity and the disparity between them in essence; and the answers lead her to yet another level in self-discovery.

In Birecikligil’s work, we witness her love of animals due to their intrinsic natural (Nature) honesty. We also see her concerns about the future of humanity due to it's growing self-alienation. At the same time, she has a hope to reach the spirit shared by all creatures, "the stars". In the end, she leaves the last word to time.
